Another vacuous comment here wit... also as a "local", I have sufficient faith in governments and regulators, and other experts, to ensure the environment it well protected. I am sure this must be working OK so far, as there as hundreds of mines in NSW and not a single Ok Tedi.

I try to attend the CMY AGM's when I can, and went to the last EGM. If you do the same then you can ask all the questions you like. I ask questions and they seem happy to anwser them. Unless you have access to some other information, I can only go on the facts. I did notice there are contact details on the Commissioners web site so you can give them a call.
Or, as you are not an investor, could this just be a case of downramping.
