The whole Djokovic saga is riddled with inconsistencies.
He met the visa requirements to enter the country and the government belatedly admitted this was so.
The Minister then declared him a threat to national security and persona non-grata on matters unrelated to his complying visa. On grounds that are unable to be contested against the Minister’s extraordinary ‘special powers’. Really? This is ok in a modern democracy? The Federal Court judges constrained to rule only that the Minister had acted within his special powers. They had no jurisdiction to consider the rationality of the Minister’s case or the Djokovic defence. A kangaroo court might have yielded a more rationally argued case.
Craig Kelly and George Christiansen are infinitely more of a threat to national security on the basis of air time and hard core anti-vax mambo they speak and publish … and the government does nothing to reign them in.
There are no end of hard core hard right dissidents out there using social media to disrupt Australia’s (admittedly confused) vaccine messaging and to undermine Australia’s and various state’s security … I doubt there has been much in the way of arrests and convictions.
Hillsong Church knowingly put 300 rapturous young happy clappers at risk last week by allowing them to sing and dance deliriously and maskless in a small sweaty marquee at a Newcastle youth camp … not even a slap on the wrist from authorities. The Church founder is even a sex offender. They rake in $100mill a year in donations and do very little charitable work. They have a free reign to subvert … and sway with the Prime Minister.
Against the above comments, deporting Djokovic looks awfully contrived and awfully convenient for a government struggling to put out fires for mishandling the pandemic response at every step and turn imo, mishandling international affairs and having a Prime Minister outed globally as a liar and someone not to be trusted.
