Has he mentioned whether he is going to run in his current seat, or whether he will run in the senate? I also used to be an election official and know the senate is very different to lower house. This will be an unpredictable election and high profile candidates get a lot of votes as opposed to most no name candidates. Even if he runs in the lower house I would not count him out, and if he decides on senate he would be very likely to get in.
