I dunno where you get that $450K figure from but is that the cost of directly saving one job? I dunno if thats value for money or not?

Is that cost higher or lower than the cost of someone losing a job, taking unemployment benefits, re-training, stress, impact on dependants, impact on other jobs related to this particular guy's consumption, impact on business doing the firing, cost of rehiring down the track, etc?

As for Canada, the trend in their national debt followed ours and others:
