Alan, That is one of the possible explanations. There are several;
Another is that Mr Thompson was having an out of body experience and that an alter ego was using his body that day and later signed the bill. There have been cases of apparent crime acquitted on the alter ego defence.
It has also been suggested by Mr Thompson that a sophisticated group may have cloned his phone (and presumably photo ID). It would have to be very sophisticated for the lady involved not to notice the latex mask.
However we must accept his assurances as he told parliament he was framed.
