1929 heralded the start of the stock market crash which started the great depression. The stock market was rising and people borrowed money to invest in the market, as it just kept going up.
Everything was booming especially resources. The govt of the day started raising interest rates to quell this unquenchable beast. The companies started to lose money but didn’t want to lower the price of there dividends, and eventually they had to. The October reporting season highlighted the true state of the market which started panic selling. Not having the economic wisdom of Paul Keating, Robert Shiller, Alan Greenspan, or Harry S Dent Jnr the govt kept raising interest rates which dampened the economy even more. Fortunately for country people rabbits were plentiful, but jobs were scarce. A lot of country people survived on rabbits, and generosity as the unemployment rate reached 20% in places. It took 40 years for the stock market to be above its pre crash levels.
1987 After mass spending by the dynamic duo of Hawk and Keating the economy was booming. The inflation rate was 5 to 6% the interest rates were 18% unemployment was rising there was a lot of pessimism around. The Button plan was introduced. Then there was the recession we had to have. The stock market crashed to its biggest one day plunge in history.
2007 Historically low interest rates, lowest unemployment in living memory, relatively low interest rates, booming economy, booming resource sector, low inflation, high au dollar, cheap fuel in comparison to wages, stock market at all time high, low pe ratio.
