Victoria to scrap international quarantine

Victoria is expected to announce that it will follow NSW and scrap quarantine requirements for international arrivals, requiring visitors to be saw double-dosed and to test negative on arrival.

This is expected to occur the same day as in NSW – November 1.

From midnight on Thursday, schools, pubs and private homes will open in Melbourne despite Victoria recording its second highest daily caseload on record, as the Andrews government kept its promise to end lockdown at the 70 per cent double dose vaccination mark.

There were 2232 new local cases of COVID-19 and 12 deaths across Victoria on Thursday, with a third of the infections concentrated in growing outbreaks in south-east Melbourne.

But authorities were not surprised by the high case numbers, which have spiked on Thursdays in recent weeks and may be because more people catch COVID-19 on the weekend.

Declaring the lockdown over from , Deputy Premier James Merlino reinforced it was vaccination rates not case numbers that would guide the state towards “living with” COVID-19.

“We’ve made a promise, a contract with the people of Victoria. Victorians get vaccinated, and we’ll get out of this lockdown and we will ease restrictions,” he said.

“The moment we get to those triggers is the moment we can announce the easing of restrictions.

“I hope everyone enjoys those first reunions with their families, the first netball, cricket training with their kids, the first pot and parma at the pub. Every single Victorian has earned this.”
