Coziron Resources will launch a prefeasibility study on its Robe-Mesa iron ore deposit in the Pilbara (reportsMiningNews).

A strategic review of the company's iron ore assets identified the potential for a 1.5-2.5 million tonne per annum direct shipping ore operation.

Former Atlas Iron operations executive Jeremy Sinclair will lead the PFS, assisted by his old boss, Atlas founder and current Coziron chairman David Flanagan.

Robe-Mesa has a resource of 84.5 million tonnes at 53.8% iron and calcining to 60.2% iron, including a higher grade component of 24.7Mt at 56% iron, calcining to 62.7% iron.

The study will look into trucking the ore 400km to Port Hedland and will consider costs, mining planning, approvals and the development timeline.

It will also target a maiden reserve.

The PFS is targeted for completion by the end of the year.

Iron ore is currently trading at six-year highs of close to US$130 per tonne, encouraging some smaller-scale potential producers in Western Australia.

Fenix Resources yesterday committed to build its Iron Ridge project in the Mid West, while Strike Resources was yesterday granted a mining lease for its Paulsens East project in the Pilbara.

Coziron, which is more than 45%-owned by Mark Creasy, has been more recently focused on gold in the Mallina Basin, 50km southeast of De Grey Mining's potentially world-class Hemi discovery.

Last week the company reported a hit of 5m at 3.2 grams per tonne gold, including 1m at 8.6gpt at the Top Camp prospect.

Assays are pending for a further 10 holes.
