The business end of town always finds a way to function in spite of governments not because of them.
Economic reality always wins out based on our current economic system and no govt will be around long enough if they can't get their policies in alignment with that.
The money needs to come from somewhere (taxes from indusrty is a big one) to fund the badly needed infrastructure on this geographically enormous land of ours. Mo mun no fun.
For better or worse people have become consumer voters based on the lifestyles we've been sold on by the marketing folks in the last 30 years. This will drive decisions for our future for better or worse.
