120,000 Australians caught in credit card scam
It is thought at least 50,000 Mastercard holders and 77,000 Visa card holders in Australia could have been affected by a security breach at a card processing company in the United States.

An additional 2,500 Visa customers have had their cards cancelled because of suspect transactions.

The security breach was reported last Friday in the US by credit card transaction company, Cardsystem Solutions.

The company said hackers have stolen the personal data of some credit card customers.

Mastercard says up to 40 million card holders may have been compromised by the security breach and 50,000 of those are in Australia.

A spokesman has confirmed that some banks in Australia began reporting unusual transactions as early as December last year.

He says the NAB, ANZ and Commonwealth have cancelled some customers' credit cards.

Banks are urging Visa and Mastercard holders who may have used their cards in the United States or online in the past six months to check their statements.

The ANZ bank has confirmed 400 customers have had fraudulent transactions on their credit cards

A spokesman for the ANZ, Paul Edwards, says the suspect transactions were detected as early as December last year.

"We've been through a process over the last six months of alerting the Visa and Mastercard schemes in our region and in the US about the issue," he said.

"So Australian banks certainly played a role in identifying the issue, but this has affected a US bank and their credit card processor."

Visa communications director Andrew Woodwood says the data that has been stolen poses a minimum security risk, but card holders should check their statements.

"The most important thing cardholders can do at this stage is keep their phone number details up to date with financial institutions, so if a bank does see suspicious activity they'll be able to contact the cardholder to see what's going on. Either verify it or cancel their card immediately," he said.
