British banking system gets BoE boost

The Bank of England (BoE) has injected more than $22 billion into the British banking system as it tries to reassure nervous money markets.

After several days of turmoil on the world's markets, the Bank is concerned that the credit crisis in the United States will spread to the UK.

The head of Britain's largest banks also met the BoE chief to ensure the bank will inject more money if necessary.

Britain's financial watchdog has also launched a criminal investigation after stock market manipulators falsely claimed that one of the UK's biggest mortgage lenders and savings bank, HBOS, which owns the Bank of Scotland and Halifax, was going under.
