1. Water scarcity remains one of the key challenges faced by the world
today as the number of people affected by it looks set to rise from 4bn currently to 5.7bn by 2050, according to the UN.
2. Additional challenges include water quality as 4.6bn people currently lack
safely managed sanitary services.
3. Water demand can increase 70%, driven by population growth and rising spending power across EM. Possible solutions include 1) a ‘circular economy’ as producing one pair of jeans requires close to 10,000 litres of water and a car as much as 100,000 litres. 2) The Energy Transition as water intensity of coal, shale gas and oil can be more than 10x that of conventional gas. Wind energy is the least water-intensive energy source.
4. Climate change causes more water stress as flooding and drought affect 2.3bn people
globally, cost US$1trn a year and could result in 143m climate change migrants according to the World Bank.
