The former head of the Health Services Union (HSU), Michael Williamson, is expected to face court today to be sentenced for defrauding the union of almost $1 million.

Williamson is facing a possible 20 years in jail after pleading guilty to charges including fraud and recruiting others to hinder a police investigation.

Prosecutors say Williamson, who was already on a salary of about $500,000 when he stole the money, was motivated by greed.

During his sentencing hearing, prosecutor Emily Winborne told the court that Williamson had created an environment within the HSU where his behaviour would not be questioned.

By creating a series of false invoices made out to the company CANME, which was in his wife's name, the then-union boss began systematically defrauding the union of $340,000 from 2006 to 2009.

He also defrauded printing firm Access Focus of $600,000 between December 2006 and February 2010.

Once inquiries into the union's financial mismanagement began, Ms Winborne said the length to which Williamson went to cover up his criminal activity was extraordinary.

Williamson's lawyers say he has apologised and taken full responsibility for his actions, noting he has also suffered depression since his behaviour was exposed.

Mr Williamson had his bail revoked earlier this month ahead of sentencing.
