PERTH: RCR Engineering has won the Western Australia Engineering Excellence Awards Products & Manufacturing Category for its innovative track-mounted mobile mining unit plant (MUP). It has now been entered into the national engineering excellence awards, which will be announced in Sydney next month.
Initial deployment of the MUP is at Iluka Resources’ Northern Murray Basin Stage 2 mineral sands project in Victoria. RCR designed, manufactured, installed and commissioned the MUP for Iluka in only 21 months, with dry commissioning completed in June this year. RCR is at the mobilisation-to-site stage for a second unit for the Jacinth Ambrosia alliance for a new mineral sands project in South Australia.
The company said the mobile mining unit plant was developed as a fully integrated and mobile ore recovery, screening and primary processing facility, designed to suit the predominantly long and narrow Iluka heavy mineral sands deposits. If the traditional approach was adopted the ore would have been transported by diesel powered earthmoving equipment, which was both costly and environmentally damaging, RCR said. “The unique MUP concept offers a fully integrated mobile solution, and supports the Iluka “green” mining philosophy with the plant operating in a small mining window as well as allowing short term re-instatement of the top soil,” it said.
