It just goes to show how much of a stigma there is around being negroid. The term 'monkey' implies that Symonds is of lower intelligence and status than whites, like a black African or a monkey. So in that sense it is quite offensive. Symonds quite rightly does not want to be grouped with a lower status ethnicity.
