“The fall of Dy in NdFeB magnets is a function of today's material reality rather than a desire to achieve optimal performance. Even if the average Dy content in NdFeB magnets comes in at, say 0.5-1% that won't eliminate the demand for magnets containing 2% in certain applications, and it also doesn't mean that a new large source of Dy wouldn't change the aforementioned reality. In short, just because the market has tried to find ways to cope with the lack of Dy doesn't mean that a new source out of China wouldn't be highly welcomed as an excuse to terminate--to an extent--these Dy-reduction research projects. The new Dy can also be used in other applications.”
