re: croissants and frites for nt--oh oh-trouble But then this doesnt help too much.Would be good to see some kind of sign Kabilas not real impressed with his old allies performance. It would be hard for him to express his view on this though as he doesnt really have a mandate from his country so he might be being careful not to tread on toes that might support Mugabe, especially in his own power base.

    Mugabe foe's hearing postponed

Tsvangirai now faces two charges of treason
Lawyers in Zimbabwe say a court hearing into treason charges against the opposition leader, Morgan Tsvangirai, which had been expected on Satur-day will not now take place until Monday.
The defence wanted proceedings to be recorded, but the court did not have the required equipment, so the hearing was postponed.

Mr Tsvangirai, who heads the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), will spend the weekend in police custody, his lawyer, Innocent Chagonda, told the French AFP news agency.

He was arrested on Friday for the second time in five days.

We were expected to quake and shake with fear at this threat from this pathetic puppet

    Robert Mugabe
His latest detention came on the final day of a week of anti-government protests called by the MDC.

The opposition leader is already facing another treason charge over an alleged plot to assassinate Zimbabwe's President Robert Mugabe.

Mr Mugabe said Mr Tsvangirai would be taught a lesson and told supporters at a rally on Friday that the MDC was stupid and naive.

"We were expected to quake and shake with fear at this threat from this pathetic puppet who regards the British as his masters and god," the president said.

He said businesses that had observed the strike by closing would now be dealt with and their licences withdrawn, adding that even schools that had closed would have to account for their actions.

    More protests

The MDC is due to meet to discuss what to do next and said mass action would continue, although from now on, marches and protests would be organised in secret so the authorities did not have time to prepare the security forces.

    We strongly condemn this arrest

Have your say: Can the crisis be resolved?
European and African countries are calling for dialogue in Zimbabwe, but in this climate dialogue seems extremely unlikely to succeed, says the BBC's Barnaby Phillips who is reporting from neighbouring South Africa as the Zimbabwean Government does not allow the BBC to enter the country.

The United States has condemned the government's decision to charge Mr Tsvangirai with treason.

A state department spokesman said "continued intimidation and repression" was not conducive to the dialogue between President Mugabe and his opponents, which he said the country needed.

Mr Tsvangirai has challenged the president's 2002 election victory, which many independent observers also denounced as fraudulent.

    Red ink

The past week has seen Zimbabwe's economy largely brought to a standstill, but the government has succeeded in suppressing street protests.

Mugabe has defended the use of force on protesters
The opposition say about 500 of their supporters were arrested.

One MDC official said the people's anger with Mr Mugabe is still not as great as their fear of his repression.

Meanwhile, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has suspended Zimbabwe's membership rights.

The fund said it was taking action because of Zimbabwe's growing arrears - now $233m - and its failure to adopt the policies needed to deal with its serious economic problems.

The IMF statement said Zimbabwe's output had fallen by a third in the past four years and annual inflation was now 270%.

Zimbabwe is under sanctions from the European Union, the United States and the Commonwealth over alleged vote-rigging by the ruling party in last year's presidential elections.
