Australia's birth rate highest in 36 yrs

Australians are heeding Peter Costello's call to have "one for the country", with more babies born last year than in any year since 1971.
And the federal treasurer is more than happy to take the credit.
Preliminary figures released on Tuesday by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) show that the number of births in Australia in 2006 was 265,922, the second highest figure on record.
Mr Costello, who on budget night 2004 famously urged Australians to have more babies including "one for mum, one for dad and one for the country," attributed the improved birthrate to the strong economy.
