open a btc markets account, bpay AUD for free (the other platforms usually charge 3%, daylight robbery). buy bitcoins/other coins on btc markets, then open a bittrex account and send the bitcoins to bittrex. why? far more markets on bittrex. also once you have some activity on btc markets account, request to increase your daily deposit/withdrawal limit (starts at $2000 AUD/day)..
also get yourself an ethereum wallet from myetherwallet.com this allows you to store virtually any coin. you can send coins to it from bittrex or btc markets. the reason you need myetherwallet is because if you want to buy into any ICOs, you cant buy into them from btc or bittrex, you need to send the funds from a non-exchange like myetherwallet.
