Peter, You have it around the wrong way I think. Gough was sacked as Prime Minister by the Governor General. The actual terminology was that the GG removed from Gough his commission from the Queen to form her Government. The GG has no power to intervene in the internal structures of any political party. The GG is the representative of the Queen in Australia and in his view, at the time, the impass that existed in the Australian Govt with Gough refusing to hold an election and the Lib dominated senate refusing to pass supply bills that led the GG to a difficult decision. His decision was that the only way forward was an election brought on by the sacking of Gough and the Labor party and also the promise by Libs that they would bring on no new policies as an interim Govt and that they would hold a full both houses election as soon as practicable.

Kevin was removed by his own party. Gough was removed by the representative of the crown. Side note: John Kerr (GG) was appointed by Gough himself.
