No matter if directly shorting as a hedge or creating an inversely correlated portfolio, buy - sell spread scalping or arbitrage trading. They can not. For many it is a numbers game. An actuarial game of measured risk. It is about probability theory and related concepts. If keen to learn more about short selling this is a good book. Short Selling: Strategies, Risks, and Rewards. It is old and some of the practices are outdated but the theory is still relative and thought provoking if nothing else. Stay safe.
