Well, they own it because they're passive funds - so they must as it's in some indices.
Or they're active funds - they like the fundamentals.
Either way, they benefit if it goes up. And they make extra income lending it to the shorters.
But they can demand the stock be returned at any time usually. And if you're short, and you can't deliver, then you are forced to buy back.
