Their are many groups Ma. Same as there are many long sided holders each with differing purposes and strategies. One group can look to exit at the same time as another is looking to enter creating supply and demand pressures in the same way as a long sided position but in reverse. Like a long sided position holder who as a group can essentially cap or put a roof on an upward trend it is also true that the very presence of a short seller can also place a floor under the prevailing price such that when some may choose to exit they may also take with them the floor they provided. Good point also @Durslowe on large and small cap divergence. One reason I suspect why in 2021 iShares Bio ETF switched their preferred benchmark from NBI to ICEBIO Hope this helps.
