Put simply - they lost control of the well. TD was 3916 mMD, but there was a "significant and highly pressured influx of oil and gas into the well bore at that depth" (ref: ASX announcement of 13th April 2022). The cement plug (250m) could not control it, so they ended up setting a liner below the shoe of the lower section and cementing it in place. In other words, a rather definitive P&A.
Learning from this - There is oil in Marti. And it is highly pressured (hence the BOP upgrade).
