A new national Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural precinct celebrating the diversity of Indigenous Australia will be built in Canberra.

    Key points:

    • The federal government has committed $316.5 million to an Indigenous cultural precinct
    • Ngarra will be build within Canberra's parliamentary triangle, on the shores of Lake Burley Griffin
    • It will house AIATSIS, a learning centre, and a national resting place for ancestral remains

The federal government has committed $316.5 million to developing Ngurra — meaning home, country or place of belonging — into a "place of national pride and significance" on Ngunnawal land.

The new cultural precinct will house the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS), and with it the world's largest collection of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural and heritage items.

"This new world-class facility will contribute to our continuing journey of reconciliation, where Indigenous Australians can tell their stories, in the way they want, for all visitors to have a greater understanding of our shared history," Prime Minister Scott Morrison said.

"Ngurra is the realisation of a long-held desire to have a home for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and histories at the heart of our nation."
