    Silver was never confiscated as far as I know....

    * it's too cheap

    * it's too widespread

    * therefore the cost of confiscating/policing is much more than the value of silver - at present and imaginable prices anyway.

    It has, however, become an essential metal used in very small amounts (so that recovery for re-use is too expensive)in a very wide range of industries. ... and it has been in supply deficit for the last 15 years .... and the huge stockpile that the USA held after WWII has all gone. (There are some suggestions that China might have a large silver stockpile and even some suggesting that China might be responsible for the massive short on Comex. If it does, it is the only one around - apart from Dlux's that is.)

    ps. biggest single use of silver that I'm aware of is 4kg in every cruise missile.
