You didn't say whether you are mainly after income or capital growth.
For me, a look at a funds top 10 stocks is well worth it. I personally wouldn't be looking at any LICs that hold big dollops of Telstra, Woolies, the Big 4 banks etc. Something like WAX or CDM holds more interest for me, especially at or around asset backing.
As well documented here, I tend to focus overseas, where I get exposure to world leading stocks, such as Google, but these sort of LICs won't help if your needing to be paid a regular income.
