They could be running a delay strategy. Some companies lodge patents that are intenionally vauge with the understanding that they'll most likely fail, in order to get a head start on a new technology. Competitors can't release something similar while the patent is pending, so it gives usually a couple years to gain market share. After that, they rely on the brand to sell. Not sure if that's what thier doing here.
