Ideally, to know to what extent the true numbers of infected differs from the reported figures, so that the real mortality rates can be determined.

Unless, of course, you believe that estimating mortality rates using a flawed denominator suffices, then its a pretty critical piece of information.

I hope you have the same view of the spanish flu, how many do you think would not have been diagnosed and survived 100 years ago?
now how many and what percentage did that kill again?
If you look at history your argument just tells us with modern testing and people getting checked for a sniffle this must be much deadlier then the spanish flu
