The Federal Opposition says no Latrobe Valley power stations would be shut down under its climate change policy.

The Government has announced a tender process to shut down 2,000 megawatts of coal-fired power by 2020, under its carbon price plan.

The Opposition's climate change spokesman, Greg Hunt, says a Coalition government would consider converting existing plants to gas.

However, he says the policy would only go ahead if jobs can be protected.

"Our approach is not to close the power stations but to offer a way forward, so ... for the next 100 years there is a generation of power in the Latrobe Valley and we're able to use the resources of the Latrobe Valley," he said.
