I've just been checking my data. My memory says he was born in the Bahamas, it IS on some of hte company documents, but the stuff I opened quickly weren't the right ones, but his background is very "British".
Even though the entrepreneurial Mary Hyde arrived in Botany Bay in 1798, I don't think anyone could call Smyth 'an Aussie'....
The families connections with the Duke of Beaufort in Wales back to medieval times shows 'old school' aristocracy. Lack of family portraits due to Colonel Smyth using them as target practice after dinner....that one really cracked me up.
As only a handful of people know what I'm talking about, I'll stop......suffice it to say the Smyth family is 'very British', even though Smyth wasn't born in the UK....
