Aged care provider Regis in ransomware attackBy Emma Koehn
The listed aged care sector is facing another battle in the COVID-19 era: ransomware attacks. Listed operator Regis told investors this morning it had been targeted by a cyber attack from an “overseas third party” that had resulted in personal data being stolen and shared publicly online. The admission comes as the government’s Australian Cyber Security Centre put out a “critical” warning on Sunday that cybercriminals are increasingly targeting aged care organisations and that a ransomware called Maze is being used to lock up or threaten businesses right across the healthcare sector with encrypting of documents. Regis is already battling to contain COVID-19 outbreaks at its facilities, with 19 residents and 23 staff at the company’s Brighton facility returning positive cases as of Friday. Three residents have passed away from the virus. Regis shares have lost nine per cent over the past week, closing at $1.32 on Friday.
