In all seriousness... reading this (WA) brings home the message that a bicycle is a vehicle and is strictly bound by the Road Traffic Act 1974, Traffic Code 2000 and Traffic (Bicycle) Regulations 2002.
Whinging about having to wear a helmet and how motorists need to keep away from cyclists is a gross representation of a much bigger picture.
I was intrigued to learn what a hook turn is...and how it's a safer manoeuvre to turn right. It's also interesting to learn that a bicycle must be dismounted and wheeled across a pedestrian crossing or childrens' crossing. Hand signals are mandatory. And riding within 2m of a vehicle for over 200m is illegal.
It's amazing how riding a bicycle (or associated other 2 or 3 wheeled transport devices) is still interpreted as 'recreational but just driven on bitumen' mentality. And yes...a Penny Farthing is legal on the bitumen.
I wonder how many would still ride if the 3 Acts mentioned above were enforced...all in the name of safety of course.
