How are we as motorists supposed to give these temporary Australians a metre space when they ride up along side us?
I would say it applys when a motorist is going faster than the cyclist...overtaking. In the video the white 4wd is definitely at fault. It isn't hard to overtake a cyclist safely and still remain in your lane.
Car drivers are inept. You place a 250mm cone on a white line of a 3m wide lane and watch how 90% of cars will 'overtake' the cone and encroach the other lane (on coming traffic if the cone is in the outside lane)! Yet...trucks who rely on mirrors and tight premises for deliveries can judge boundaries. And they have a wider wheel base than cars!
I can't defend motorists because the average motorist is no brighter than the average cyclist. Mix them together...throw in a pedestrian and most accidents aren't accidents.
