    Pilbara braces for Glenda's arrival
Western Australia's Pilbara region is bracing itself for destructive winds of up more than 250 kilometres an hour, as severe tropical cyclone Glenda heads towards the state's north-west coast.

Communities throughout WA's key resources region are on red alert this morning, as destructive gale force winds batter the coastline.

Residents have already been evacuated from some low-lying areas around Karratha, with the Bureau of Meteorology predicting high winds could create dangerous storm surges as the centre of the cyclone crosses the coast later today.

The bureau's Noel Pusey says the full force of the cyclone is yet to come.

"As the cyclone approaches the winds will increase to about 130 kilometres an hour, becoming very destructive near the centre up to about 265 kilometres an hour in gusts there," he said.

At 2:00am AWST, Cyclone Glenda was 215 kilometres north of Karratha could hit that town and nearby Onslow as early as this afternoon.

At 3:15am AWST, a cyclone warning was current for a severe category 4 cyclone for coastal areas between De Grey and Minilya Roadhouse, extending inland to Tom Price, Paraburdoo and Mount Augustus. A cyclone watch extended south to Billabong Roadhouse and inland to Cue.
