Yeah so true Hanrahan it is eerie and its hard to describe .. all is quiet.. my daughter described Yasi the day before ..'its like the end of the world dad'. The routine of daily life is not even a consideration.
If we get one of these category 5's hit a major town like Cairns or Townsville their will be chaos and mass evacuations, (Cardwell 2011 multiplied by 100's of thousands). Fortunately we have good monitoring and warning systems in place to prevent, or reduce substantially, the loss of life.
People get complacent when we have weaker cyclones as we have had this season...this one at the centre is as intense as anything we have seen.
