Bangladesh introduced its nuclear energy bill for discussion in the national parliament Sunday, as the country prepares to build its first nuclear power plant in 2013, the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission Chairman ASM Firoz said Monday.

Science minister Yafesh Osman introduced the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Control Bill 2012 in parliament, he said.

After the bill is passed by the parliament, the country will be able build its first nuclear power plant which is expected to generate 2,000 MW from two 1,000 MW units at Rooppur in the Pabna district, about 200 km north of Dhaka, the BAEC chairman said.

Construction of one of the nuclear units is expected to begin by 2013, Firoz said.

Bangladesh and Russia had on November 2, 2011, signed an agreement to build the first nuclear power plant, Platts has reported earlier.

On February 17, Russian nuclear regulator Rostechnadzor and Bangladesh's Science and Technology Ministry inked a deal on technical cooperation and to develop infrastructure at the plant.

The bill proposes creation of the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Regulatory Authority, which will be responsible for supervising use of nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.

The BAERA would be the highest policymaking authority for looking into nuclear safety and security, protection and overall management of the planned nuclear plants in Bangladesh.

The nuclear power plant is part of the government's plan to generate 20 GW of electricity by 2021. Bangladesh's overall electricity generation is around 5 GW against demand for over 6.5 GW.
