Daigou - new tax?

    Hi All,

I can't find any reference to the implantation of this new daigou/personal parcel tax, other than in this AFR article? Can someone from Bellamy's or a person who is close to the daigou trade please clarify the situation?

The article seems light on direct source references or evidence.  We have quotes from a delivery company employee and a Customs Bureau employee, but neither are very official?  It also says the tax started on April 8th, why have we heard nothing about this until May 18th?  There are conflicting articles saying regulation has been postponed??

    All very confusing...

The first step by Chinese authorities was to begin levying import taxes of between 15 per cent and 60 per cent on food and consumer goods sent through the mail or via couriers.

"The main items being targeted [for the new tax] are infant formula and cosmetics," an employee of the Customs Bureau told the Australian Financial Review in Shanghai.

"It does not matter if it is from friends or for commercial use everyone has to pay the tax."

Under the new tax regime, which came into effect on April 8, vitamins will attract a tax of 15 per cent, while the impost on wine will be a hefty 60 per cent.

For infant formula tax will be levied at a flat rate of 30 yuan ($6.30) per kilo.
