Air core drilling uses a blade and air for drilling. The blade cuts up the weather rock and air forces it up the sample hose to the surface. The blade cannot penetrate fresh rock or hard layers. Most rigs have a hammer bit to put downhole should a hard layer be encountered or the rig supervisor (geologists most of the time) wishes to go a little further after blade refusal.
