Regulation just validates the industry and is welcomed. Banks would rather wholesale lend to the BNPL operators than seriously play in a space they won’t get traction in. Banks will lose on CCs but gain new clients to wholesale to. Banks are infrastructure and lend money in a traditional way, that’ll never change as those are the rules for them and what has worked to date. If you look outside of BNPL, like the property development and investment space (commercial and corporate), banks are losing ground to private equity, HNWs, syndicates etc. in Australia it’s roughly 70/30 split between banks and them. In the US it’s the other way, 30/70 but was not always the case. Like I’ve said before, banks are slow and alternative financing is gaining a lot of ground. The consumer space has been in dire need of innovation and new services which is why BNPL has prospered and will continue to do so.
