    from ABC Online;

    The Australian dollar has ended 2003 on a new six-year high against the US dollar at 74.95 US cents.

    Weaker than expected US economic data, including consumer confidence figures, mounting current account and budget deficits, and continuing fears of possible terrorist attacks pulled the greenback lower.

    The Australian dollar has jumped almost one-third against the US currency since the beginning of January.

    It is at its highest level since August 1997.

    The US dollar has also plunged to new historic lows against the European single currency.

    At one point in late trade on Tuesday, the single European currency struck $US1.2562.
