Thanks for replying and for your input into the discussion. You are correct that there were reasons why flat glass was not manufactured here in the past. Some of those reasons include no adequate supply of silica sand and no motivation to do so however the world has changed. Most countries are far more aware now that to rely on any commodity from a less than friendly country presents risks that were not so important some time back. The issue of financial viability of any manufacturing activity in Australia is an easy one because any proposed activity will undergo rigorous financial scrutiny firstly by the proponent and there stakeholders and then by their bankers. If it doesn't stack up usually it wont go ahead. If it does they have the choice to proceed or not.
