Will Electric and Hybrid cars be overtaken by Flex fuel cars? Major car manufacturers in the US like GM and Ford are tending towards flex fuel cars. Brazil has had flex fuel cars running for decades. GM is looking at regaining the green car image through its flex fuel cars using up to 85% ethanol. It already has 2.5 million of these cars on the road and is partnering with ethanol producers to get more E85 pumps installed around the US. An Energy bill was signed into law last year by President Bush requiring 36 Billion gallons of ethanol to be produced in the US. At manufacture, it costs about $200 to convert a vehicle to run on flex fuel and anywhere up to $8000 for a hybrid module. You can buy a lot of fuel for $8000.
