Unfortunately you can't buy very much fuel for $8000 these days. Ethanol is just another way of subsidizing the US farm lobby and is having all sorts of undesirable effects, pushing up food prices etc. Its also questionable whether there is any environmental benefit as land use changes for cropping release large amounts of CO2, and ethanol requires large amounts of energy and water to generate.
Electricity is currently the most efficient, cheapest and environmentally friendly way to power transport. The only thing that has been holding it back is storage capacity. Now that problem seems to have been solved with the new generation of lithium batteries.
