australia,s only urea plant is owned by incitec (ict) and located on gibson island linked to the ammonia plant. this plant was built in the 1960s and currently has a maximum production capacity of 250,000 tonnes of granular urea per annum. high gas costs and older, less effecient technology has led incitec to plan the closure of the plant in 2006. unless another plant is commisioned australia will be wholly reliant on urea imports.

this creates an opportunity for the dampier nitrogen project to establish a world scale ammonia plant on the burrup peninsula with the potential benefit to replace imports and export product.
