"Both the Libs and the Labs were going to build a Desal plant, so not political party specific regarding the existence of the Desal plant.

I don't know much about the N\S pipeline, so can't comment on the merits one way or the other. Though to say if the Libs believed there would never ever be a need to use it, they had plenty of opportunity to sell it as scrap."

Glug I note you're getting desperate to find a way to clear dopey Dan, you are kidding of course about the Libs being recalcitrant for not digging up and selling off the NS Pipeline concrete pipe and returning all the split-in-half farmland to farmers and replacing and reopening the closed roads or would you rather it be re-sold as it is_in the ground_ as a way to make use of the desal plant by trying to pump this expensive osmotically desalinated water all the way from Wonthaggi up to Sugarloaf Dam and then on up over the Divide to the Victorian food bowl. around Shepp'?

A new dam was always the preferred choice of the Vic Libs and Nats if and when it was needed not a humungous white elephant Desal plant.
The first time we Victorians knew anything about a Desal Plant being an option at all was when Minister Thwaites announced it was happening, period, and of course he was supported by Premier Bracks .

Glug why do you think they both quit all of a sudden and cleared their offices out in a rush the same day?

It wasn't because the pair realised the Desal plant work was going smoothly and on time down at Wonthaggi and the CFMEU bludgers were working their guts out for standard wages lol!

The writing was on the wall even then it was going to be a vastly over-schedule, over-budget white elephant costing between $25-30 billion [depending on which decade in the future it finally gets paid off] and that the desalinated water wasn't even going to be needed.
Right about now Glug you can repost the initial $1.5 billion approx. Vic' Gov't budget document for the desal plant costing, the old original one you sourced through your experienced, public service know-how.

All Bracks was doing was assuring his Labor party would continue to get lots of Garden City votes by drought-proofing Melbourne's suburban gardens and just in case the Desal plant wasn't enough he splurged out on ramrodding the NS Pipeline and the Geelong to Melb. water pipeline through at huge expense and impact on the Vic Treasury.

The NS Pipeline was built solely to steal irrigation farmers' and market gardeners' water from the Goulbourn river and redirect it south to Melb. not the other way around Glug so good luck with your labor-lite plan to resell it!.
