IMO this sort of assault is a total mystery to most. I read the story of the fellow in the US (mentioned by nickyjames), who apparently joined in some sort of psychopathic "game" which involves finding a target and trying to punch them unconscious with one punch. They even have a name for it, the "knockout game".
I'm sure many on HC, including me, have done silly or even stupid things in their lives, but NOTHING even remotely like this! It's the sociopathic aspect that is so disturbing. That these young Americans have no empathy for the suffering they cause.
I hope that this sort of madness from the US is not being imported. A drunken or drugged assault on a hapless victim is not quite so dreadful IMO. Not at all trying to justify it, but it's mitigating circumstances. What gives me a very faint hope is that Loveridge felt some regret for his action. Hopefully genuine.
But anyway, soapbox time over, except to nickyjames, who I paraphrase: If you can only see revenge as the answer, you're part of the problem...
