I live next to a river, where the Council has helpfully erected ugly signs to advise people that it is NOT an offlead Dog exercise zone, which is of course the default anyway. Unless it's explicitly permitted, it is not permitted. Some years ago after a big flood the authorities spent big $ creating floodways so that water overflowing the river banks could traverse the municipality. Then they started planting trees in the floodways to decorate, which will exacerbate flood events by impeding flow. We also see signs at beaches, prohibiting sleeping in cars and drinking alcohol. A blight, and they don't allocate resources to enforce these signs, but we all have to look at them. Nanny states always fail eventually.

" Nanny states fail eventually " ? Care to offer any proof of that example. So far in the nanny state of Australia since federation we've seen a national grid developed, a national road system, hospitals, water reticulation, sewerage systems etc. Maybe you'd like to go back to these days ?
