Santos Ltd is leaning towards processing its Browse Basin gas resources through a liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant in Darwin, according to The Australian Financial Review.

The energy giant is reviewing its development options for the resource, and is considering the possibility of sending gas from the basin to ConocoPhillips' Bayu-Undan gas platform in the Timor Sea, where it would then be transported through an existing pipeline to the Darwin LNG plant.

An additional option would see Santo joining with Total if more gas can be found in the Browse Bain, to justify an expansion of Inpex's Ichthys LNG venture being constructed in Darwin.

“We think Total's objective is to secure gas feedstock for an Ichthys Train 3 LNG project,” Citigroup analysts Mark Greenwood and Dale Koenders said, according to the AFR.

“We think that by the end of 2013, Santos, Inpex and Total will have a fair indication of whether they have sufficient resources to underpin an expansion train at the Ichthys LNG project.”
