IGO prime for europe (different parts of europe are available - depending on where you want to go)would well be worthwhile taking on the apples ---------- we used this one and tom tom on ipads in Europe and the combination was magnificent.
We found tom tom to be more familiar at navigation - but, IGO was better at POI - and if you ever had a place tom tom didn't know - then IGO did. (I haven't checked lately if IGO is available for android).
I don't know about the canals - I will fire up things later ------------ you CERTAINLY would be able to see yourself on screen though - and that may well be enough - it's not like you will be going at 80km/hour.
